Le Corbusier. Biography. Outlines of his life

1946

In this year Le Corbusier started his project "Unite d'habitation" that got realized in the Marseille project.

1946-1952

Le Corbusier was commissioned for a dwelling project in Marseille. New elements of sculptural shaping and design modified his strong purist attitude.

1950-1954

New tendencies in his work were manifested by a first example of ecclesiastical architecture: the chapel Notre-Dame-du-Haut at Ronchamp (1950-55) revealed an aberration from his former functional principles. Organic forms showed up demonstrating a more or less "plastic style".

1951

Extensive opportunities to materialize his ambitions regarding city planning: Le Corbusier got commissioned as architectural advisor for Punjabs new capital Chandigarh.

1952

Second well-known demonstration of his architectural ambitions with ecclesiastical buildings: the Dominican monastery Saint Marie de la Tourette.

1953

1.Exhibition of his works in Paris.

1960

Highlight is the building of the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.

1963ff

One last famous work for the Harvard University (Carpenter Center) in Cambridge, Mass. The Visual Arts Center again incorporated fundamental elements of his theory: massive ramps, the fluent transition from the outer space to the inner space of a buldings; the use of raw concrete; supporting pillars for every floor; sunshades.

1964

Design of a pavilion for exhibitions in Zurich.

1965

Le Corbusier died on 27th of August.
