Le Corbusier. Biography. Outlines of his life

1919

The main ideas of Le Corbusier's purist spirit were manifested in "Après le cubisme", of which he was co-author, together with Ozenfant. Both coined the postcubist Purism movement for the coming years.

1919

Foundation of the new avantgardist review "L'Esprit Nouveau" with Paul Dermee His authorship was masked by the new pseudonym Le Corbusier. The reviews treated themes about avant-garde architecture and city-planning following structural and functional principles.

1922

Le Corbusier now worked with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret. His ideas were now more and more focused on the building of houses. He published a controversally discussed plan for a city with 3 millions inhabitants ("Ville Contemporaine") combining structural and functional aspects for large living communities. Offices, public services, shops and other public utilities had to be integrated, the traffic for cars and pedestrians should be separated. Houses were seen as "machines for living in".

1922

Salon d'Automne of 1922 : he revealed his concept of five basic principles: pillars freeing the space below the building ; a roof terrace, an open floor plan; facades without ornaments; a structured front of windows enabling to use the natural power of the sunlight.

1923

His first great work on architecture was published: "Vers une nouvelle architecture".

1923

Close contact to the Weimar Bauhaus Movement, especially Walter Gropius. He took part in the exhibition of 1923.

1925

Break with Ozenfant.

1925

Plan of an adaption of his Ville Contemporaine concept for the city of Paris failed.

1925

New plans concerning city planning and architecture were presented at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

1927

Le Corbusier paticipated with several plans for the House at Weissenhof, Stuttgart (in Germany)

1927

Failing in a competition (by the League of Nations). The League planned a new centre in Suisse (Geneva) and looked for a proper design solution. He was disqualified from what arose a great affair.
