Le Corbusier. Biography. Outlines of his life

1887

The famous man called Le Corbusier was originally born as Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland, a deeply protestant region famous for its watchmaking standards. His father was a designer, his mother worked as a musical teacher.

1900ff

At the beginning of the 20th century Jeanneret-Gris´s apprenticeship started at the École des Arts Décoratifs in La Chaux de Fonds. He studied enamelling, engraving and painting, aesthetically deeply influenced by his teacher Charles L' Eplattenier.

1907-1911

Long travels through Central Europe and the Mediterranean Sea as well as jobs for several prominent architectural offices were marking this period. In 1908 young Charles moved to Paris where he began working in the architectural practice of Auguste Perre and studying the teaching of design. He also was introduced to important people like Hermann Muthesius or Wolf Dohrn.

1914

Jeanneret-Gris was appointed for a professorship at the École des Arts Décoratifs in La Chaux de Fonds. In the same year he developed his system for houses with multiple storeys with the core idea of a skeleton made of reinforced concrete.

1917

He decided to live in Paris again, by which for the next decade his life turned into a new direction. Especially after he had met the painter and designer Amédée Ozenfant, he shifted to a postcubistic view of forms thereby eliminating complex structures and substituting them by essential geometric forms.

1918

Still known as Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris , Le Corbusier extended his horizon painting clearly structured still lifes.
