
Born in Purmerend, Mart Stam studied drawing at the Rijksnormaalschool vor Tekenonderwijs in Amsterdam from 1917 to 1919.
He worked as a draftsman for a Rotterdam architctural practice until 1922, when he moved to Berlin. In 1923, he took part in an exhibition at the Bauhaus. In 1925, he returned to Amsterdam via Paris and a year later made his first cantilevered chair.
His chair designs were shown at the 1928 "Der Stuhl" exhibition in Stuttgart. He became a founding member, with Gerrit Rietveld and Hendrik Petrus Berlage, of the Congr?s Internationaux d`Architecture Moderne in 1927.
From 1931 to 1932 he worked in Russia as a town planner and from 1948 to 1952 he taught architecture and design in Dresden and Berlin. He retiered in 1966 and moved to Switzerland.
