Piet Mondrian was born in Holland in 1872. The Dutchman repeatedly lived and worked in Paris for longer periods of time.
His topicless, elementary compositions originated from procession of symbolistic shiftings of meanings of colors and cubistic shape-splitting. Mondrian belonged to the circle of the avant-garde magazine "De Stijl", published by Theo van Doesburg from 1917-1931 in the Netherlands. Similar to the Bauhaus artists and the Russian constructionists, the authors of "De Stijl" were hoping for the clear design of all areas of modern life to have a healing effect on society.
