Charles R. Mackintosh

Born in Glasgow, in 1884 Charles Rennie Mackintosh entered the practice of local architect, John Hutchinson, and in 1889 he joined the architectural office of Honeyman & Keppie.

By 1896, he was designing furniture for Messrs. Guthrie & Wells and exhibiting with H.J. MacNair and Frances & Margret Macdonald as "The Four". In 1897, he won the competition for the new Glasgow School of Art building.

The same year he was commissioned to decorate Miss Cranstons?s Buchanan Street Tea Rooms. In 1900, the year he married Margaret Macdonald, he exhibited at the Vienna Secession Exhibition. In 1903, he received the commission for Hill House, Helensburgh from the publisher, W.W. Blackie.

In 1904, he designed the Willow Street Tea Rooms for Miss Cranston. His last major work, the School of Art Library (1909), received little attention. In 1916, he moved to London and then, in 1923, to France, where he painted until his death in 1928.
