Marcel Breuer

Born in Hungary, Marcel Breuer spent a short time working in a Viennese architectural office before studying at the Bauhaus, Weimar, 1920 ? 24.

After graduating, he became master of the furniture workshop there and continued in that capacity when the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925.

He directed his own architectural firm in Berlin from 1928 to 1931 before leaving Germany where he spent a year in London, 1935 ? 37, working first as an architect in partnership with F.R.S. Yorke and later as Controller of Design at Isokon.

In 1937 he emigrated to the United States of America and was an associate professor at the School of Design at Harvard University from 1937 to 1946.

Between 1937 and 1941 he shared an architectural practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with Walter Gropius.

From 1946 he headed his own firm, Marcel Breuer & Associates, in New York until retirement in 1976.
