The origins.

What were the origins of the bauhaus design characteristics, the historical roots of bauhaus furniture of which we sell reproductions?

The Bauhaus was founded on April, 1st 1919 in Weimar (Thuringia, Germany) after a long pre-history leading back to the 19.th century with its enormous problems arising after industrialization and mechanization had penetrated England and the continent. Two schools merged under the newly appointed director Walter Gropius and merged to the state-owned "Bauhaus Weimar".

Connected with this foundation were mannigfold artistic, cultural and social ideas relating to the specific Bauhaus design of furniture, works of art or architecture. The highest value for Gropius was to enable the followers to finally create a building. The main aims were to refine the commercial and industrial work by a team-work of art, industry and handicraft, working together in a unified and unique spirit. This represented an ideal of a work community for all related workers and artistic disciplines. The education was formed on a workshop model (with an obligatory introduction course), led by some of the most competent experts in this time.

Back to the roots meant an intimate contact with materials and a renewal of basic skills of craftsmen and artists. The Bauhaus was the first school of arts undergoing such a reform in the new republic which opened the doors for pupils from different classes and eduactional backgrounds. Many struggles had to be fought. Meanwhile the Bauhaus design had been influenced by the Durch "De Stijl" and taken over by the city of Dessau 1925 the Bauhaus was shut down after the political rollback in 1932/1933 after fourteen years on the path to developing products and works of art with a high industrial and artistic standard. Clearness in shaping when constructing furniture, discipline in color and design, integration of intuition and rationality formed this unique school of art and the Bauhaus furniture design.
